The Harbour Master’s House in Shannon Harbour, County Offaly, is a historic building with deep roots in Ireland’s inland waterway system. Built in the early 19th century, it was home to the Harbour Master, responsible for overseeing navigation on the River Shannon and maintaining the local docks, locks, and quays.

Shannon Harbour was a key hub in the Shannon Navigation system, connecting the River Shannon to the Grand Canal, facilitating the transport of goods like coal and agricultural products. The Harbour Master’s House played a central role in managing this busy port.

As canal traffic declined in the 20th century, the area became quieter, and the Harbour Master’s role was phased out. Today, the Harbour Master’s House serves as a welcoming Bed and Breakfast (B&B), offering guests a unique stay in a building steeped in local history. It’s a perfect spot to explore Shannon Harbour’s heritage, nearby Shannonbridge, and the iconic Clonmacnoise.
